Folkloric ghost ship, referred to in print from 1795 onwards and reportedly sighted by numerous sailors. According to the legend, the Flying Dutchman was the apparition of a lost sea vessel, with a crew cursed to sail indefinitely.
Golgarach sought it as the answer to his second question to
Team 11 of Series 3: "Who is the sailor who is doomed to sail forever?"
The Flying Dutchman legend is thought to have inspired the literary character of the
Ancient Mariner (who was known to the aforementioned
Team 11), not to mention
Knightmare's own
Captain Nemanor and
Cloudwalker.
